TRAC was appointed principal contractor to clean and re-paint the 120no. hangers which carry the main bridge deck of the Tamar Bridge.
The Tamar Bridge links the A38 between Devon and Cornwall and carries up to 50,000 vehicles per day over the River Tamar.
TRAC was appointed principal contractor to clean and re-paint the 120no. hangers which carry the main bridge deck. The hangers vary in length from 2m to 32m, each with a 54mm diameter.
TRAC’s specialist rope access operatives worked in pairs with one lowering the other down the hanger in order to keep both hands free for painting.
All tools, paint and equipment was attached with lanyards and containment buckets were used to prevent detritus dropping onto live traffic.
The hangers were prepped to remove any contamination and then a special viscous metal-rich paint, which does not set hard, was applied using a sheepskin mitt. This allowed the painter to work the paint into the wire strands to ensure a uniform coverage.
The high level works were undertaken off-peak with minimal traffic management in order to minimise disruption to traffic.
Works were completed on time and to budget.
